Customer Reviews

Single best item I have purchased for my boatSingle best item I have purchased for my boat. (More than 40 years of boat ownership.) completely eliminates any drama or effort while docking.. As my wife and I get older jumping on and off the boat while docking was becoming less attractive by the season. no need to do that with the Docking Stick. 5Slips off cleat too often no matter size of bowline or technique.I tried it various ways, with bowlines of different sizes, and even wrapping the loop around the cleat twice; but still found it had a tendency to come off of the cleat. My boat is longer than my slip, so I reach forward from the cockpit and pass the loop on the dock stick over the first cleat on the corner of my slip, hoping to use it as a spring line to pull me in alongside the dock; but as I pass the cleat the loop tends to come off of it.This happened on occasion even after I doubled the size of the bowline and wrapped it completely around the base of the cleat using the tip of the dock stick held close to the dock. Failure rate after dark was especially high, as you have to get it positioned just so. Must have tried the thing two dozen times, no exaggeration, with all different sizes of bowlines and carefully positioning it on the dock stick as shown on the directions. When the loop stays on the cleat; it's fantastic. But when it doesn't and you were planning on using that line to spring in alongside your dock; it's bad news.I tried the Landing Loop device too, with improved results; but still not 100% reliable. It can be hard at times to get the slip-knot tightened before it comes off the cleat; but that said, I only had it fail once out of a dozen times; as opposed to the Docking Stick failing one out of four times. I don't think either one should be counted on as a primary docking method for a single-hander, especially after dark. More as a supplemental tool, especially if you have crew on board. But if you're a 64-year-old single-hander like me, you don't really have time to first see if one of these will work before going to a plan B. Your plan A needs to be one that will work every time. Neither of these can be counted on to do that.I do keep both of them on board and can imagine times they would be useful, but seldom get them out. Instead, I usually have ready the Boat Loop by RS Marine (I bought the long boat pole with the extra long loop) to pull me into the finger pier if the wind is blowing me off of it. But I can toss a loop of line around a cleat and have it hold with greater dependability than either the Docking Stick or Landing Loop, and it's simpler and doesn't leave a pole in my hands to have to fuss with. 2Work great? They work great and I highly recommend them. A must for single handed sailors! 5Great help for short-handed dockingAs with any tool, it takes a bit of practice to use. Setting the length of the lines and hooking the dock cleat without it coming off required some experimenting. Once set, it greatly simplified docking with only one person to handle the lines. Dock lines can be secured without leaving the boat. A cautious approach to the dock should be made since the loop can come off the dock cleat when the device snaps off the boat hook. 5Valuable tool, especially tall boats.Useful for hooking a pier it a cleat with a spring line. 5a must for pontoon boatsmakes one man retrieval a breeze! 5Spend a little more for a Boat LoopI tried to save a few bucks on this item. Not that easy to use, so I ended up buying The Boat Loop 2Didn't work for meUsed it once and it was a disaster. I couldn't catch the cleat in time and pull it in, and then the device got in the way of a person on the dock trying to catch the line. 1A must for every boatHave used a docking stick for about 5 years. As we age, jumping off the deck is no longer an attractive option. The docking stick allows safe stern tie-off from the cockpit. Dockhands aren't always knowledgable (or don't follow instructions). We'll now have one for mid-ship tie-off as well. These are meant only for initial securing of the boat -- then replaced with regular dock lines. We find we have more control with lightweight line - then replace quickly, once secured with our regular, heavy dock lines. Highly recommended!! 5So simple, but so usefulSurprisingly effective for such a simple device. Ideal for the sailor sailor. I learned of this product from a YouTube sailor Patrick Laine and he uses it on solo passages. It s so simple but surprisingly useful. 5
