Description

  • ROUND RITUAL BELT. Round Israeli gartel (not the standard flat) is used for prayer mostly by hasidim.
  • COLOR: Black
  • 15 STRINGS. Gartels are composed of multiple strings, anywhere from four to over forty in number. The more strings the wider the gartel.
  • MADE IN ISRAEL!
  • PREPARE FOR PRAYER! Donning a gartel is a preparation for prayer, in accordance with the line "Prepare to meet your God, O Israel" in the Biblical verse, Amos 4:12 (Shulchan Aruch O.C. 91:2). The Mishnah Berurah (91:5) states that any waistband is adequate for the first requirement, however for the second requirement more is needed, which the gartel fulfills. Can also be used for a mitzvah tanz.


Description

The gartel, a woven belt, is worn by many during davening prayer and other religious ceremonies and activities. The white gartel is traditionally worn to match the white kittel, on occasions like Yom Kipper and the Seder Night. The gartel size indicates the amount of strings, which makes the gartel wider.
The gartel is reminiscent of the belt which the priests would wear during their service in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It is for this reason that many are particular to wear their gartel at elbow height, just as the priests of old did.
